The USS Mustin (DDG -89 ) is a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy. It belongs to the Arleigh Burke-class. The ship is named after the Mustin family, which serves the Navy since 1896 and has produced several admirals.
History
DDG -89 was commissioned in 1998. The keel of the destroyer was placed at Ingalls Shipbuilding in early 2001, the launch took place at the end of the same year. Official date for the entry into service was the 26th July 2003.
2005 sailed the Mustin as part of the battle group led by the USS Carl Vinson (CVN -70) to the Persian Gulf as protection from attacks after Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since 2006, the destroyer is deployed as a forward unit along with the USS Kitty Hawk (CV -63 ) in Yokosuka in Japan. There they took over from the frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG -48 ) and took part in the 2007 exercise Valiant Shield.
2008, Mustin was sent to relief efforts after Cyclone Nargis on the coast of Burma. After more than three weeks off the coast of the battle group was removed by the USS Essex (LHD -2), however, after no permission was received to bring relief supplies into the country. In 2009 she participated in the exercise Talisman Saber with Australian forces in part.
Arming
For the defense of approaching missiles, the ship received the anti-aircraft missiles Evolved Sea Sparrow RIM -162 Missile ( ESSM ), which are fired from the Vertical Launching System. To further antiaircraft 2007 Close- In Weapon System has been installed in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM later behind the aft funnel structure, which was not originally intended for the construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
