Utricularia pubescens

Flowering of Utricularia pubescens

Utricularia pubescens is a carnivorous plant in the genus of the water hoses ( Utricularia ) of Lentibulariaceae family. It is used in India, Africa and South America.

Description

Vegetative characteristics

Utricularia pubescens is a one-to two -year, terrestrial or lithophytische plant of creeping habit. They only produced rhizoids of simple construction and a thickness of about 0.2 mm. The stolons, however, are richly branched and several inches long. The leaves are numerous and spread loosely over the stolons. Their stems are 2-10 mm long, sometimes fleshy lamina is shield-shaped and reaches about 1-8 mm in diameter. The leaf veins are forked and only slightly interwoven.

The traps appear in large numbers and rising to the rhizoids, the stolons and on the petioles. They are ovate, sitting on short stems, and their size varies between 0.5 and 0.8 mm. The vent is at the side and is occupied outside of the case flap and tightly around the valve with short-handled comb- shaped arranged glands.

Generative features

The inflorescence is erect, simple in construction and unbranched. It is 2-35 cm long, the stem is round in cross section, 0.3-0.6 mm thick and hairy glandular. The bracts are fused at their base, oval and about 1.0 mm long. The flowers appear singly or up to tenth. The sepals are occupied slightly convex and with papillae. The corolla is 5-10 mm long and white to pale purple colored, it exhibits the lower lip a bleached stain with dark violet border, sometimes the entire stain is monotonous purple. The upper lip is striking flowers smaller than the lower, it is elongated and is narrower toward the tip; the lower lip is almost circular, with a prominent ridge at the base and a rounded tip. The flowering spurs is conical and somewhat longer than the lower lip. The heyday seems to draw the whole year through, especially floriferous but Utricularia pubescens is at the beginning and end of the rainy season.

The seed capsules are spherical, their diameter is about 1-2 mm. The capsule walls are plump and relatively thick. The seeds are about 0.25 mm.

Distribution and habitat

Utricularia pubescens is in India, living in the African Congo Basin and in the rain forests of South America. Where it grows in torfhaltigem versumpftem and grasslands, along creeks or on wet rock. Their habitats can be sunny or shady and there are 0-1000 m above sea level.

System

Utricularia pubescens is the only species of the section Lloydia, are the closest related sections Calpidisca and Austral. The species was first described in 1819 by James Edward Smith, the Section 1986 by Peter Taylor.
