Väinö Kajander

Väinö Viktor Kajander, later Kajukorpi, ( born November 30, 1893 in Elimäki, † September 16, 1978 in Helsinki) was a Finnish wrestler.

Career

Väinö Kajander started for the club " Helsingin Jyry " the ( TUL) belonged to the Finnish Workers Sports Association.

In the Summer Olympics 1932 in Los Angeles, he won in the class up to 72 kg ( welterweight ) in Greco-Roman wrestling silver medal. For this start, he had come because he had emigrated in the late 1920s in the United States. Although he was already 39 years old, he therefore offered itself in 1932 to represent Finland at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Although Finland had in Mikko Nordling the European welterweight champion from 1930 and 1931, and thus the best wrestler in the world in this weight class, they went in to this offer in order to save travel expenses for an athlete. Mikka Nordling had to stay in Finland.
