Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey

Convent Val -St- Lambert is a former Cistercian abbey in Belgium.

Location

This former convent is in the municipality of Seraing in Liege Province, about 13 km southwest of Liege.

History

The monastery was probably founded in 1187 on a foundation of Hugo Pierrepont, bishop of Liege, as a daughter house of Signy Monastery in the Ardennes in France, which was in turn a subsidiary of the monastery, founded the monastery in 1126 Igny. It therefore belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. With the construction of the monastery was begun in 1202. The monastery was canceled at the time of the French Revolution in 1796. Since 1826, the building of a crystal manufacturer ( Cristalleries du Val -Saint -Lambert ) are used.

Plant and buildings

In the second half of the 18th century, the monastery was restored. The monastery church was demolished in 1802. Get a monastery tract from the 13th century ( chapter house and the scriptorium from the period around 1290 have been restored). In Val -St- Lambert, formerly belonging to the abbey well, classified Historic Monument in 1973 as the summer palace of the Prince Bishops of Liege, in which the crystal museum is housed.
