Valdres Folkemuseum

The Valdres Folk Museum in Fagernes ( municipality Nord-Aurdal fylke, Oppland ) is with 100 houses, a medieval grave, grave stones, a coal mine and a coal preparation plant and about 25,000 objects, the fourth largest open air museum in Norway. It was founded in 1901 and is situated on a peninsula that juts into the lake Strandefjorden. The larger buildings are located at the entrance, the smaller farmhouses on the significantly higher ridge that protrudes into the sea. All houses are transferred to the museum originals from the Valdres region. The oldest house dates from 1350 and is the oldest secular building in Valdres. The grounds of the museum is open in summer as a farm.

The museum has the oldest folk music archive in the country with 12,000 titles, a study center and a musical instrument workshop. The photo archive of the museum contains 75,000 images.

History

The first, the 1900 had the idea of a museum in Valdres, was the then headmaster of the School of Agriculture in Oppland, Nils K. Odegaard. The museum was founded in March 1901. The first location was a 1906 bought lot. This was sold again in 1917, and the museum acquired the site in Storøya. In the years after 1906, several collectors and antique dealers were able to acquire extensive ethnographic collections. 1909 was the collection already made ​​600 individual objects.

The museum is one of the six churches in Valdres and operated since 2006 by the Valdresmusea A / S. It was founded in 2006 and is among other things, the operating organization of museums Bautahaugen Collections, Bagn Bygdesamling and Valdres Folk Museum.

Modern museum building

After several years of discussion, it was decided in autumn 2007 to build a new building. It houses a large hall for concerts, a café and a shop. The new building was added to the old, and has 900 m² of floor space with an asymmetrical gable roof. One side is made ​​of glass, the other is covered with grass. Other building materials are wood, steel and concrete. It was completed in 2009. Architect is Lund Hagem.
