Valigonda train disaster

In the railway accident Valigonda derailed on October 29, 2005 Valigonda in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh Delta Express, because a bridge had been washed away. 114 people died.

Starting position

The Delta Express, a train of South Central Railway, the upside of Repalle to Hyderabad was strongly occupied on that day due to the holiday for Diwali Festival of Lights with about 1000 passengers. It consisted of the locomotive and 14, 15 or 17 cars.

The route, which still sailed the train in the dark against 4:15 clock, crossed a bridge that spanned the runoff to a retention basin. For more than a week of strong monsoon rain had fallen for three days and with particular intensity. In the dam, the pent-up water contained therein, a crack had occurred, the increased yield and let the dam. The emerging water masses tore away the railway bridge before the train they had traveled.

Circumstances of the accident

The train crashed into the void, with the locomotive and seven cars crashed. Three of the passenger cars of which fell into the water and were further rinsed. This is where most people died.

114 people died and another 200 were injured. The rescue work was hampered because the streets were softened by the constant rain. The Indian Navy sent divers to the scene to help in the rescue and recovery operations. So some people said to have been saved yet who had persevered in air chambers under water.

The accident drew a parliamentary inquiry by the Indian Federal Parliament after themselves. Also present farmers were severely damaged by accident and recovery work.
