Valvin Muscat

Valvin Muscat is a white grape variety. It was founded in 1962 by the newly bred American breeder Bruce Reisch and Thomas Henick - Kling.

Valvin Muscat is a cross between Couderc 299-35 and Muscat Ottonel. This is a complex culture in which genes of the wild vines Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera are available.

The new variety was developed at Cornell University in Geneva ( the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Pomology and Viticulture, so the vines breeding Institute in upstate New York). The university is located at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. First test plantations were created in 1964 and larger field trials were conducted in the year 1969. Since 7 July 2006, the grape variety for commercial viticulture is released.

Valvin Muscat has a pleasant nutmeg flavor. Im not quite fully ripe the wines resemble a Gewürztraminer. Since this is due to the influence of Vitis rupestris a hybrid vine, it is not approved for quality wines according to EU regulations. The grew strong variety is not very hardy.
