Vammala
Vammala [ vɑm ɑlɑ ː ] is a former town in the West Finnish landscape Pirkanmaa. It is located around 50 km south-west of Tampere on the railway line to Pori. The nearly 17,000 residents are almost exclusively Finnish speakers.
History
Vammala was founded in 1907 on adoption of the Russian Czar and the Finnish Grand Duke Nicholas II as a market town ( kauppala ). In 1965 the town was awarded its town charter. In 1973, the neighboring municipalities Karkku and Tyrvää were incorporated, followed in 2007 Suodenniemi. At the beginning of 2009, Vammala united with Äetsä and Mouhijärvi the new city Sastamala.
The two oldest neighborhoods are Vammalas 1973 eingemeindeten places Karkku and Tyrvää where there are two medieval stone churches. In Karkku a first wooden church was built in the 12th century. The Church of Sastamala today was built around 1500. Vammala is also known in Finland due to its numerous antique shops as the " City of Books ". Every summer, will be held in the school of the district Sylvää a book fair, which attracts up to 20,000 visitors annually.
