Vampyromorphida

Vampire squid Similar ( Vampyromorpha )

  • Vampire squid ( Vampyroteuthis infernalis Chun, 1903)

The order of the vampire squid -like cuttlefish ( Vampyromorpha ) is in modern seas apparently only represented by a single species, the vampire squid.

Features

They are characterized by the possession of a Schulps and still in between the first and the second pair of arms ( counted from the head ) a couple of retractable, thread-like structure (filaments ), which are used as sensory organs. The cuttlefish is reinforced with the extinct species usually even through thin layers of lime. At today's vampire squid cuttlefish the other hand, is purely organic.

Paleontology

From the fossil record, you still know, however, a greater number of species that occupy the originally much larger distribution and species diversity of this group. The oldest member of the group come from the Upper Triassic ( Rhaetian ). From the Middle Jurassic ( Callovian, about 161.2 to 164.7 mya ) of southeast France is also known Vampyronassa rhodanica.

System

Together with the Kraken i.e.S. ( Octopoda ) and the Cirrentragenden Kraken ( Cirroctopoda ) they form the group of eight-armed squid ( Octopodiformes or Vampyropoda ) within the squid ( Coleoidea ).
