Vangelis Meimarakis

Evangelos ( Vangelis ) Meimarakis (Greek Ευάγγελος ( Βαγγέλης ) Μεϊμαράκης, born December 14, 1953 in Athens ) is a Greek politician and member of the New Democracy party. He is the current President of the Parliament Vouli.

Biography

Meimarakis comes from a Cretan family. He studied law at the University Pantion Athens, where he has already participated in a student political union. In 1974 he joined the conservative New Democracy party and was a founding member of the party youth organization ONNED.

After military service he was in 1984 admitted to the bar in Athens. He was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the ONNED and led the organization until March 1987.

In the parliamentary elections in June 1989, he was elected on the list of New Democracy for the first constituency in Athens as an MEP re-elected at the next election and November 1990, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012. 1992 to 1993 he was Deputy Minister of Culture ( with responsibility for sport). After that Meimarakis Secretary General of the New Democracy party.

From February 2006 to October 2009 Meimarakis was defense minister.

End of September 2012 announced Meimarakis, he let his office as President of the Parliament rest for the time being because of the corruption charges brought against him.
