Vanguard Records

Vanguard Records is a record label that was founded in 1950 by Seymour Solomon and his younger brother Maynard Solomon. Initially conceived as a label for classical music, it is now known for its blues and folk releases in the 60s.

History

Under the leadership of John P. Hammond a number of jazz under the name Jazz was released Showcase 1953-1958.

From the mid-50s, the spectrum has been expanded so that Vanguard artists such as Paul Robeson and The Weavers took them under contract. Furthermore, were with younger artists such as Joan Baez and Richard Fariña recordings published ( see list below ).

For the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the label Nixa Records obtained licenses from Vanguard Records.

The label brought from the mid-1970s only a little music out. In 1985, the label was sold to the Welk Music Group. The catalog of classical music was sold back to Seymour Solomon, the music is published under the name Vanguard Classics.

Under labels

  • Flip Records was a short-lived sub- label that had specialized in the publication of new wave and dance music. After two releases this came to a halt.
  • Bach Guild when this label appeared, for example, with the conductor Felix Prohaska, a series of recordings of Bach cantatas with Austrian music performer.
