Vardavar

Vardavar (Armenian Վարդավառ ), also Vardavar, is a celebration in Armenia, in which people spray each other with water. Celebrated Vardavar exactly 14 weeks ( 98 days ) after Easter Sunday.

Name

There are different names for the festival. Vardavar is also called the " Feast of the Conversion ", " Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ." The word Vardavar has also further translations, whose origin is not backed up: " The glow of the Rose ", "The spraying with water," "Rose Brand" or " fire blight ."

History

In the formerly pagan Armenia had Vardavar the goddess of love and beauty, Astghik dedicated. The people back then sprinkled a sign of inner and outer purity with rose water or normal water.

After Christianity came to Armenia, the Armenian Church gave this festival a religious significance by since the Transfiguration celebrates that day. It is one of five high feasts of the Armenian Church.
