Veld

As Veld [ fɛld ] ( Afrikaans or Dutch, German Land ') is called in South Africa mainly the plateau-like regions within the country, on the coast opposite side of the Great Escarpment ( Great Escarpment ). In a broader sense, the term can be with the Australian Outback, the Argentine pampas or the New Zealand High Country compare.

Depending on the geomorphological features, local climatic conditions, vegetation and altitude multiple regions are called Veld.

Low Veld

The Low Veld or Low Country is an extremely narrow strip in the north- east of South Africa and it is located directly on the border with Mozambique. The area is located at about 150 to a maximum of 900 m above sea level and extends arcuately from the Waterberg levels in Ellisras on the Limpopotal to the Lebombo levels. Foothills of the Low Veld are also in eastern parts of Swaziland and also in the far eastern part of the province of Mpumalanga. Here are also the associated Murchison Range and the Barberton region. Note the island-like mountains of the Murchison Range.

It is in the southern summer quite rainy and in the summer the only malaria region of South Africa.

Middle Veld

The Middle Veld is a region north of the middle reaches of the Vaal River, approximately between Vryburg and Johannesburg. It is bounded to the west by the Kaap Plateau and northeast of the Bush Veld. The landscape is in the West and in its center is predominantly a lowland dry valleys. In the eastern part of the Magaliesberg Gatsrand and there are hills. The height ratios are 900-1800 meters, soar eastward. In the same direction, the annual rainfall increases.

High Veld

As High Veld is referred to the northward sloping down towards the highlands of South Africa. It is located in the southern Transvaal, now mainly the provinces of North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and extends over a large part of the Free State Province. The altitudes vary 1340-1830 meters above sea level. Its south-western boundary begins approximately at the place Welkom and the easternmost point is at Witbank. Its eastern border is the Great Escarpment between Nelspruit and Harrismith. The bounding the High Veld in the extreme northeast mountain ranges to Lydenburg and Waterval Boven is also called the Transvaal Drakensberg, however, are not to be confused with the Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho and Natal.

The vegetation of the High Veld consists mainly of grassland, only in the hills and the river terraces, there is bushland.

Bush Veld

The Bush Veld is a region north of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand. In the north it is bordered by the Limpopo Highlands, the Low Veld and in the south by the Middle Veld. The region is eponymous for the Bushveld Complex. The landscape is mostly flat wavy and north of Pretoria provided with some hills island-like expression and eye-catching pyramid mountains. A large part of the area called Springbok levels.

It is seen a clear species- richer region than its surroundings, the moderate annual rainfall ( 375-625 mm).
