Velenice (Česká Lípa District)

Velenice ( Wellnitz German ) is a municipality of Okres Ceska Lipa in the Liberec Region in the north of the Czech Republic. It is located in the south of the Lusatian Mountains on the road from Zákupy ( Empire City) to Cvikov ( Zwickau in Bohemia) in the valley of the river Svitávka ( Zwittebach ).

History

Velenice was once a center of mirror production in Bohemia. North of the village in Zwittetal existed from 1767 built by Count Joseph Kinsky Max mirror factory Wellnitz. 1854 mirror factory Rabstein was founded, whose distinctive, located under a large rock overhang production building is still preserved. The necessary for the production of mirror glass sand was recovered near the mirror factories underground. In its day, resulting underground workings ( " Desert Church " ) are all located near the road to Svitava ( Zwitte ) and are publicly available. Administratively formed Wellnitz from the mid-19th century, a municipality in the district court or in the district Bohemian Haida Leipa.

Attractions

In the village there is the Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity of 1735. West of the village lie on the castle hill the remains of a medieval castle. The most important attraction of the place is the 1711 created holy grave ( Bozi Hrob ), a term in an artificial cave chapel.
