Vera Wang

Vera Wang (* June 27, 1949 in New York City ) is an American fashion designer of Chinese descent. She is known for her extravagant clothing, but especially for their wedding dresses.

Life

Wang attended The Chapin School in Manhattan and then studied at Sarah Lawrence College and the Sorbonne in Paris. The Sarah Lawrence College, she graduated with a diploma in art history. Wang began as a child with the ice skating and took part in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. After she did not manage to qualify for the Olympic team, Wang moved to the fashion industry. She worked for 16 years in the fashion magazine Vogue and transferred in 1985 for two years for Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation. There, Wang worked as a design director.

In 1990 she opened her own fashion studio in the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. She designed besides wedding dresses and shirts for figure skating. Nancy Kerrigan won the silver medal in a designed by Wang jersey at the Olympic Games in 1994.

Wang designed the wedding dresses among other things, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham, Sharon Stone, Heidi Klum, Holly Hunter and Chelsea Clinton. 2001, her book Vera Wang on Weddings was published by Harper Collins in New York. In June 2005 she won the awarded by the Council of the Fashion Designers of America Title Womenswear Designer of the Year. 27 May 2006, Wang was awarded the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

In addition to her clothing line Wang also designs sleepwear, eyewear, perfume and shoes.

Wang was married from 1989 to 2012 and has two daughters.
