The ( Serednij ) Werezkyj Pass, dt Verecke Pass or Latin Porta Rusciae (Ukrainian ( Cepeднiй ) Верецький перевал, transcription ( Serednij ) Werezkyj Pereval, transliteration ( Serednij ) Verec'kyj pereval, also Ворітський перевал, Worizkyj Pereval / Voric ' kyj pereval; russian ( Cpeдний ) Верецкий перевал, ( Sredni ) Werezki Pereval / ( Srednij ) Vereckij pereval; Hungarian Vereckei - Hago, also Vereckei - szoros ) is a strategically important mountain pass in the Carpathian Ukraine north of the town Volovets.

The 841 m high pass played an important role among others in the history of Hungary. According to legend, came 895 the majority of the Magyars under Árpád in their conquest over the pass to the Carpathian Basin before. In this context, it is also referred to as " Magyarenweg ". 1241 remembered the Mongolian main army over the pass and beat the Hungarians at the Battle of Muhi.

During the First World War, Russian troops fought in 1914 with heavy losses the breakthrough before they were repulsed on January 30, 1915 by Austro- Hungarian and German troops. During the Second World War, the troops of the Red Army in 1944 came over the pass to Hungary before.

In the 1980s, a new route would be applied about five kilometers to the west of the road. Today's Ukrainian highway M 06 between Mukachevo and Lemberg leads no longer over this pass.

Trivia

In his book best chance to die for the soldier Dominik Richert also comes through the Carpathians. He urgently describes the poverty of the area. When it comes to Verecke pass, he can not contain a word game:
