Versilia

The Versilia is a coastal landscape in the north-western Tuscany in the provinces of Lucca and Massa- Carrara. The name derives from the 12 km river Versilia.

Geography

The Versilia is located between the Ligurian Sea and the Apuan Alps. It initially consisted of the municipalities Pietrasanta, Camaiore and Seravezza, Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio in the 19th century were then assigned to the field. In a broader sense, the two northern towns of Massa and Montignoso the province of Massa -Carrara and the south, the municipality of Camaiore be included. Seravezza and Stazzema that do not lie on the sea are called the Alta Versilia.

The area is crossed by the ancient Via Francigena road and the Via Aurelia. In addition, the area is situated on de SS 1, which connects Pisa and Genoa.

Description

While the coast was formerly swampy and sparsely populated in many sections, it is now marked by a series seaside resorts that are visited in some cases since the 19th century. There you will find swanky mansions and hotels, but also guest houses and holiday apartments. The area is visited by Italian and foreign tourists.

The hilly hinterland rises to the nearby Apuan Alps to go. The formerly dominant farming with olives and wine loses against the tourism importance.
