Mission and priorities

The memorandum on the reconstitution of the Viadrina in 1991 emphasized that their have been applied four specific tasks:

  • You will act as a reform university. The New should primarily lie in its internationalism and its interdisciplinarity.
  • It should contribute to development of the region on both sides of the Oder.
  • It shall promote the German -Polish cooperation in particular in the field of science and culture.
  • It is to give the pan-European integration impulses.

With regard to the international Viadrina puts her focus on Europe, especially Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the European Union (including the neighboring regions to central Asia ). However, the focus on Europe includes reference to non-European countries not - as the Viadrina has worldwide to approximately 200 universities contacts ( for example, after Russia, North and South America, South Africa or Australia). In the curriculum, this focus on the provision of multilingual courses, the student exchange, international courses as well as language training according to European standards ( UNIcert ) expresses.

The interdisciplinary approach is reflected in cross-faculty courses such as the Master of "European Studies" or the master " protection of European cultural heritage " and designed interdisciplinary courses and course orders. In the area of research to find the interdisciplinarity in three research institutes of the Viadrina anchored: the Interdisciplinary Center for Ethics ( IBE ), the bioethical and edited primarily issues of justice in the transformation and with bioethical issues; the Frankfurt Institute for Transformation Studies ( FIT), cooperate to the members of all three faculties and just deals with transformation phenomena in border areas; and the Heinrich -von-Kleist Institute, which combines literature and politics together.

With regard to the German - Polish cooperation is first the cooperation with the partner university in Poznan ( Adam Mickiewicz University ), in the German - Polish legal education (Bachelor and Master " of German and Polish Law" ) and especially the Poznan with the University of jointly run the Collegium Polonicum to call in Słubice. In addition, the Viadrina has to a large number of other Polish universities contacts.

The establishment of a Master's program in Complementary Medicine - Cultural Studies - Dentistry at the Institute for Transcultural Health Sciences in 2010 led to controversial discussions in the Board of Trustees, ministries and media, whether esoteric content with the name of a public university should be linked and should. The time wrote " New Agers infiltrate the German universities. The difference between science and nonsense blurred ".

The INTRAG offers a master 's program " Cultural Studies - Complementary Medicine " ( KWKM ), which was accredited in 2008 and 2009 began operating. By 2012, the program " - Cultural Studies - Complementary Medicine Healing" was ( KMKH ). Will conclude the course with the academic degree of Master of Arts. The endowed chair is funded by the company Biological cure Heel GmbH, one of the financially strongest representative of the homeopathic pharmaceutical industry.

Content can be viewed in the study regulations. A public debate about the Institute was held by a Master Thesis from the year 2012, which deals with the so-called Kozyrev mirrors, should be possible by clairvoyance or contacts with aliens and the deceased. The work criticizes an author in the SZ as a " derailment academic standards " In June 2012, the structure of higher education commission of the state of Brandenburg recommended " strongly future waiver of the offer of the MA degree program ' Cultural Studies - Complementary Medicine .'" Furthermore, the continuation of the Institute for Transcultural Health Sciences either as an in -Institut has been advocated as an institute. Die Welt reported in November 2012, the president of the university try this quarrel "with a muzzle for his professors curb ". According to a circular of June of the same year, all press inquiries were agreed before answering with the university management.

The structure of higher education commission of the state of Brandenburg criticized in its final report submitted on 8 June 2012, the Institute for Transcultural Health Sciences at the European University Viadrina. The report states:

"Against the Institute for Transcultural Health Sciences at the EUV exist on the part of the Commission that major structural concerns. The Institute has only limited references to the main practice areas of the university. At the same time consists in its lineup and the design of the offered through the Institute continue forming MA degree program, Cultural Studies - Complementary Medicine 'where the Commission's view, a qualitative problem.

A formulated in the objectives of the Institute humanities reflection at the edges of scientific medicine is desirable in principle. Also in the medical faculties of German universities themselves ( certainly not in the desirable extent ) reflections medical actions and decisions. However, it seems highly doubtful that this reflection can take place in the framework of the Institute as appropriate. For an analysis of complementary medicine requires absolutely the close relationship with the scientific side of medicine because they can not be alone worked as a cultural studies topic scientifically and practically. Complementarity requires necessarily the interaction of two equivalent transferring components. The personnel requirements for this are, however, not given to the TEU.

The staffing of the course is on the side of scientific medicine almost exclusively on lecturers, mainly from private practices instead. A scientific background of the rank of university medicine can not find a sufficient extent. The target group of doctors, pharmacists and psychotherapists, to which the study guide, Complementary Medicine ' of the Institute particularly directed shall be supervised by a total faculty, the predominantly medical knowledge is incomplete. This is particularly true for research that should underlie the doctrine.

Overall, adequate for addressing the topic of research in the university setting is required manpower as material resources of the Institute, the Commission considers not recognizable. Also, does not reveal the value of the formulated by the Institute, Internships - based research purpose '.

Looking at the overall profile of the EUV finally finding appears stating that no evidence of internationalization of the MA program are identified. In particular, no visible connection to the international scientific medicine is available.

The structure of higher education Commission recommends that the EUV accordingly strongly future waiver of the offer of the MA degree program, Cultural Studies - Complementary Medicine '. A continuation of the Institute for Transcultural Health Sciences is neither as far as to advocate home institution nor as an institute. Appears reasonable at best, the private sector to operate the institution outside the university on. "

The Viadrina decided in February 2013 to overrule the recommendation of the Higher Education Commission structure and continue the institution. The Institute shall enter into a cooperation agreement with a previously mentioned medical school within the next 2 years.
