Viareggio train derailment

In the railway accident of Viareggio derailed on 29 June 2009 at the station of Viareggio, Italy, a freight train loaded with butane gas, whose charge exploded in part. 32 people died.

Starting position

The freight train No. 50325 of Trenitalia was traveling on the railway Pisa -Genoa Trecate after Gricignano di Aversa. The train was pulled by the locomotive E.655.175 and consisted of 14 tank cars of General American Transportation Corporation ( GATX ), which were part of the Polish State Railways ( PKP) and never part of Deutsche Bahn. GATX was responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles.

Circumstances of the accident

23:48 clock derailed the first car of the train, one of the freight cars that were set at the Deutsche Bahn, at the entrance to the railway station of Viareggio. The derailment site was located on a straight section of track, without crossover. The cause was probably a broken axle on the vehicle. The car struck the edge of the platform and tipped, as well as the following four chariots to the left. The next two cars derailed also without tipping over the last seven cars remained on the track. The train came after 500 meters, 200 meters past the end of the platform, to stand. The gas flowed out, also in the station neighboring districts, and exploded shortly afterwards.

32 people died, 27 were also injured. In the context of the explosion hearth there was severe destruction of both the railway infrastructure and buildings outside the railway facilities. About 1,000 people had to be evacuated. Two houses collapsed. Large parts of Viareggio were damaged, 100 people were left homeless. The two train drivers escaped with minor injuries.

The European Railway Agency worked because of the accident on pan-European issues with axles of railway vehicles and wrote a report to.

On November 13, 2013 in the Tuscan town of Lucca began the process which should clarify those responsible for the tragedy under 33 accused.
