Vickers Wellesley

The Vickers Wellesley was a slight British bomber of 1935. He was already outdated at the beginning of World War II and had to be withdrawn from the European front. Its field of application was from 1940 to 1942 in Africa, Egypt and the Middle East.

History

The Wellesley won a tender in 1935 indirectly, as their competitors, the biplane bomber Vickers Type 253, Fairey and Parnall G.4/31 G.4/31 who could not convince the Royal Air Force. The Wellesley was then financed by venture capital and offered. The RAF ordered 176 machines that were delivered until 1938.

The version Mk I had two separate cockpits, the successor Mk II only a cockpit. The hull was covered with duralumin and fabric. When engine is a 925 hp Bristol Pegasus XX leis border was used.

1938 three machines were equipped for long-haul flights with additional tanks. On November 5, 1938 Wellesley two non-stop flights in two days from Egypt to Darwin in Australia. The record distance was 11,525 km.

The Wellesley was not a particularly good plane and therefore fought in 1941 in the second row against Italian associations in Africa.
