Vita and musical career

Vicki Genfan began at the age of five years, to play guitar. My father played the 12 -string guitar, mandolin and fiddle, plus he had a good voice and was therefore one of their musical idols. Even her older brother played guitar. She studied until the late 1970s, classical music and jazz at Ithaca College in New York. In addition to the guitar Genfan also plays the piano, percussion and trombone.

In 1994 they recorded their first, self- produced album Native, which, however, did not drive out commercially on a larger scale. In 2001 they released their self-produced CD also Outside the Box. In the same year she won the Just Plain Folks Award American for the title of this album New Grass. In 2003, the label Acoustic Music Records released the CD Vicki Genfan Live, the live recording of a concert as part of the Open Strings Festival in Osnabrück. 2004 Vicki Genfan second in the Mountain Stage New Song Festival in West Virginia with her song Eleanor. 2006 double CD Up Close & Personal was released in which a CD contains only instrumentals, the others are only vocal pieces.

Vicki Genfan has been, among others, Tommy Emmanuel, Laurence Juber, Kaki King and Jennifer Batten on stage. She is often compared due to the unusual technique and lyrical, flowing style of play with Michael Hedges or Pat Metheny. Vicki Genfan was presented in several American and German journals and sometimes referred to as "Queen of the open atmosphere ." In September 2008, she won the Guitar Superstar contest, music magazine Guitar Player in the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

When not on tour abroad, she plays many smaller and larger concerts in the northeastern United States. She is an experienced and good teacher, organizes workshops and are also private lessons. She is currently working on an instructional video to their techniques as well as on a book which will include their compositions.

Style

Playing style and musical influences

Vicki Genfan describes her musical style as " folk meets radio ." It is a mixture of jazz, funk, pop and world music in a contemporary folk context. For this purpose, it rules over a number of unusual guitar tunings, harmonies and rhythms that connects them with driving percussive elements. Characteristic of their style of play are " two handed tappings ", often explosive "tapped " and " slapped harmonics" with one or more fingers of the right hand and slapped bass lines.

Genfan occurs not only as an instrumentalist, it should also be understood as a songwriter. Her singing is supported and complemented by her guitar playing in a successful manner.

The main inspiration Vicki Genfan calls her father. She is also influenced by James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Meshell Ndegeocello, Marvin Gaye, Jonatha Brooke and Leo Kottke.

Guitars and equipment

Genfan plays a Gibson L -140, a Gibson LG and an Alvarez Silver Anniversary. The Alvarez guitar has a Truetone pickup system, in which two microphones and a LR LB6 Baggs pickups are blended with two outputs.

Your 12-string guitars are made by the companies Guild and Luna Guitars. Genfan also plays a Vega 6 string Deering Banjo. For their guitars she uses medium -gauge strings the company D' Addario.

Large share in the full, clear tone of Genfans guitar playing has their sound engineer Tay Hoyle, who accompanied them on many tours and participates in the production of their CDs.
