Victor-Marie d'Estrées

Victor- Marie, duc d' Estrées ( born November 30, 1660 in Paris, † December 27, 1737 ) was a French military and statesman, Vice Admiral, Marshal and Peer of France.

Life

Victor -Marie came from the influential French aristocratic family of Estrées. He was the son of Marshal Jean d' Estrées II (1624-1707) and the grandson of Marshal François- Annibal d' Estrées (around 1573-1670 ).

He participated as a ship captain in the expeditions of his father to America, Tripoli and Algiers. In 1690 he was one of the squadron commander at the Battle of Beachy Head. He commanded in March 1691 galleys, which resulted in the capture of Villafranca, Nice and Oneglia, and bombed in 1697 Barcelona and Alicante. 1703 elevated to Marshal of France and the Spanish grandees, he contributed significantly to the naval victory at the Battle of Vélez -Málaga ( 1704) when, after the death of his father, governor of Nantes and Coucy and Viceroy of America.

In 1715 he was appointed President of the Navy Board and Vice President of the Commercial Council, introduced in 1717, the regency and in 1720 entrusted with the province of Brittany. Later, he also reached the duke, was admitted to the State Council in 1733 and 1734 received the awards of a first Marshal of France. Estrées was a member of several academies. He died on December 27, 1737 in Paris.
