Victor Saúde Maria

Victor Saúde Maria ( * 1939 † 25 October 1999) was from 1982 to 1984 Prime Minister of Guinea- Bissau.

Political career

He belonged since the time of the independence war against Portugal, the Partido Africano da Indepencia as e Cabo Verde Guinea ( PAIGC ), which ruled the country until 1999. After independence in 1974 he became foreign minister. On 14 May 1982 he was Prime Minister under the 1980 -down by a coup to power President João Bernardo Vieira. Some of his cabinet ministers were dismissed in August 1983 on charges of corruption. Vieira called him shortly thereafter became a member of the newly formed National Security Council.

On March 10, 1984, he was dismissed because of " conspiracy " by Vieira and initially found asylum in the Embassy of Portugal. After leaving the embassy end of March, he was placed under house arrest. When the new Constitution was accounted for the Office of the Prime Minister and Vieira became heads of state and head of government.

After the admission of other parties in addition to the existing single party PAIGC 1992 he founded the Social Democratic Party Partido Unido Social Democrático ( PUSD ), which he led until his death. In the first free presidential elections, he ran for his PUSD and reached the first round on July 3, 1994 6,388 votes (2.07 %) in seventh place. In June 1999, after the fall Vieira, he was the head of a delegation of Guinea Bissau, who traveled to negotiations to Senegal. On October 25, 1999 he was assassinated.
