Vieux-Fort, Guadeloupe

Vieux Fort is a commune with 1834 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in Basse- Terre in the overseas department of Guadeloupe. It belongs to the canton of Trois- Rivières.

Geography

Vieux Fort is located at the junction of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, at the southern tip of Basse -Terre at the foot of the mountain chain Le Caribbean area, 8 kilometers southwest of the cantonal capital of Trois- Rivières. The next neighboring municipalities are Basse -Terre in the northwest and Gourbeyre in the Northeast.

History

Charles Lienard de l' Olive was a settler from France, from the trading company Compagnie des îles d' Amérique ( Company of the American Islands) received permission to settle in Guadeloupe and to manage the populated islands. He landed in 1635 in the north of Basse -Terre and migrated with the colonists to the south of the island. At Vieux -Fort, he was the first fort built on the island. It gave the village its name, Vieux -Fort means " old fort ". Today's Vieux -Fort was built around 1648 about the same time as Saint- Louis, by immigrants from the West Indies.

Attractions

The fort was built in 1636 Olive century, got its name it 1643rd It has the oldest bell tower of the island and is known for its lighthouse, which was built in 1955. At the lighthouse you have a view on the Îles des Saintes. The fort is now also the Centre de broderie ( embroidery center ), the top issues.
