Viktor Buchstaber

Life

Book Staber studied from 1960 at the State University of Tashkent and from 1964 at the Moscow State University, where he in 1966 his diploma in mathematics made ​​. In 1970 he earned his doctorate under Sergei Novikov ( and Dmitry Fuchs) and in 1984 he received his habilitation (Russian doctorate ). From 1969 he worked at the National Research Institute for Physical- Technical and Radio Technical Measurements ( VNIIFTRI ) in Mendelejewo, where he headed the department of mathematical modeling from 1979. He is since 1993 professor at the Moscow State University (Department of Geometry and Topology ) and since 1996 at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics (Department topology). He has been a visiting professor at the University of Maryland ( several times in the 1990s ), Tel Aviv University, the University of Edinburgh and Manchester.

Since 1995 he has been editor of the Russian Mathematical Surveys ( Uspechi Mat.Nauka ) and he is co-editor of Functional Analysis and Applications. In 1970 he was awarded the prize of the Moscow Mathematical Society for his contributions to topology ( Kobordismentheorie, K - theory). Since 1994 he has been the Council of the Moscow Mathematical Society. 2001 to 2004 he was the Council of the European Mathematical Society. He was 1974 Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver, but the lecture could not keep. He is a member of the London Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society. Since 2006 he is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He is married and has two children.
