With 430 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011) is by Arnis in Germany the second smallest city in Europe.

Geography

Vila do Corvo is located at the foot of the volcano crater in southern Calderão Corvos on an old lava flow. It is the only town on the island.

History

Vila do Corvo founded in the 16th century, after earlier settlement attempts probably discovered in 1452 by the navigator Diogo de Teive island Corvo had failed. In the 17th and 18th centuries the city was regarded as the hideout of pirates. On July 21, 1832 Vila do Corvo got by the Portuguese King Peter IV the town charter. It was not until 1963, the island had electricity. In 1973, she was connected to the telephone network.

Attractions

The single-nave church Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres was built from 1789 to 1795. At the Ponta Negra stand next to the lighthouse, three traditional windmills.

Traffic
