Vilim Harangozo

Vilim Harangozo ( born January 25, 1925 in Subotica, † January 14, 1975 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslavian table tennis player. He was once a world champion and later was national coach in Germany.

Active

Vilim Harangozo was a defender who recently Yugoslav national player of all time was already at the age of 14 years. He won several national Yugoslav Championship. In 1954 he won in Berlin at the International German Championships in the individual before Richard Bergmann and doubles with Josip Vogrinc. The same double brought them here also in 1960 the title. Before the Second World War Harangozo was eligible to play for the Hungarian championships. In 1942, he was with his brother Tibor Hungarian champion in doubles. In the same year he won the Hungarian team championship with the club Szabadkai Atlétikai és Torna Club.

From 1948 to 1959 Harangozo was represented at the World Championships eight times. In 1954 he became world champion in doubles together with Zarko Dolinar. A year later he won silver with the same partner. He had already won in the 1951 Mixed with the Austrian Ermelinde Wertl A silver medal.

At the European Championships in 1958 he reached the semifinals in singles.

Coach

After his retirement he worked as coach of the Yugoslav national team. In the Table Tennis World Championships 1965 in Ljubljana, he led the Yugoslav team as the best European team to 4th place. In November 1965, he was hired by the German Table Tennis Association DTTB as a coach. He was the first national coach in Germany. During his tenure, both the German men's team in 1969 as well as Eberhard Scholer in the individual runner-up were. In August 1971, he resigned and was succeeded by Hans alser.

Honors

In Harangozos hometown Subotica in 1976 erected in his honor in the park near the sports hall is a bust, at the same time a street was named after him in this district.

Private

His older brother Tibor Harangozo ( * 1922, † 1978) was a Yugoslav table tennis international, who participated in three World Cups.
