1954 World Table Tennis Championships

The 21st World Table Tennis Championship took place from 5 to 14 April 1954 in London / Wembley (England) instead.

The aerea of Asians is beginning: Japan wins the team competition of the men and women. Up to the present time, these contests are - with few exceptions - usually obtained from Japanese or Chinese teams.

Germany is again at the start. The men's team to Conny Freundorfer occupies the 10th place. Member of this team is Peter von Pierer - and for years marshal of the DTTB. The Saarland occurs - as in other sports - with its own team of.

The Japanese and later ITTF President Ichiro Ogimura wins the title in the men's singles against days Flisberg from Sweden. Men's team competition

Germany reached only number 10 and was therefore demoted from the ITTF of the Performance Category I in category II.

Conny Freundorfer defeated Adolf SLAR (CSSR ), Zarko Dolinar (Yugoslavia), Brian Kennedy (England), Gantner Matei ( Romania) and Brian Merrett (England) and lost to days Flisberg (Sweden) and Georges Roland (Belgium ).

Peter von Pierer won against Hugo Urchetti ( Switzerland ).

Men's Singles

Conny Freundorfer won against Aleksandar Grujic (Yugoslavia) and lost to Földy Laszlo (Hungary).

Helmut Hanschmann defeated the Englishman Robert Griffin, but lost in time after the game for England playing Richard Bergmann.

Hans Meier rock switched from Lennart Johansson (Sweden ), but then had to still reigning world champion Ferenc Sido (Hungary ) no chance.

Peter von Pierer was eliminated by the Englishman Brian Kennedy.

Heinz Schneider sat down Waldemar Duarte Pinto ( Brazil) and Miklos Sebok (Hungary ) by, but then lost against the Englishman Peter Shead.

The Saarland Willi Trautmann defeated by Owen bye Jaine (New Zealand) and then against the Austrians Heribert Just lose.

Women's Singles

Martha Behrens defeated in the qualifying round Elsie Carrington (England) and defeated the Frenchwoman Claude Rougagnou.

Anneliese Ratius difference immediately against Josee Wouters (Belgium ).

Ursula Paulsen won against Doris Lindblad (Finland) and was followed by Rosalind Rowe (England) defeated.

Hannelore Imlau lost to Kathleen Best (England).

Women Doubles

As the only women's doubles Imlau / Paulsen scored a victory, namely the Danes Gudrun Kahn / F.Brobech. After that, they were subject to the Englishwomen Joyce Seaman / Jean Winn. Herresthal / Naumann immediately lost against Josee Wouters / Mary Detournay (Belgium ). The bye headed Graf / Ratius without a fight in the second round, where they failed to Margaret Franks / Joyce Roberts ( England). Also Behrens / Bep Oosterwijk ( Germany / Netherlands) came without a fight on, then meant Shirley Jones / Vera Rowe (Wales ) terminus.

Mixed

Rock Meier / Paulsen won against the French Jean -Claude Sala / Claude Rougagnou.

Trautmann / Ratius (Saarland) came through on a round bye, then retired from Josip Vogrinc / Dinka Nikolic (Yugoslavia).

  • Dr. Zarko Dolinar was the only world champion, who had a scientific doctoral degrees. He was a physicist.
  • The Indian player Miss Sultana went to the sari.
  • When held in parallel ITTF Congress, some members questioned the proposal to prohibit bat with foam rubber pads. Such bats have been successfully used by Japanese players. This application failed to obtain the 2/3-majority (France voted against the motion ), racquets were still allowed for two missing votes.
