1937 World Table Tennis Championships

The 11th World Table Tennis Championship took place from 1 to 7 February 1937 at the spa town of Baden ( Austria ) in the drinking Kurhalle (now Casino ) instead. In order to increase the attractiveness of the tournament, each participant reported to be half of his travel expenses.

Multiple time the new rules were applied: two games with winning records were allowed no more than an hour last three games with winning records no longer than 105 minutes. A single set was allowed to take a maximum of 30 minutes. So the meeting Sergey Senekovič (Yugoslavia) was - Abou heif (Egypt) draw counted because in the first sentence, the maximum playing time was exceeded by 30 minutes. In the encounter Helmuth Goebel ( Austria ) - Farkas Paneth (Romania ) were both disqualified due to timeout.

In the men went to 13 teams. Surprisingly taken by the USA # 1, all the other teams brought in particular through its " notch spreads " in embarrassment. For the first time a non- European team won the title; this should succeed only in 1954 again the Japanese.

Also competing at the women's teams won the United States. The German team took second place.

The final of the women's singles denied Ruth Hughes Aarons (U.S.) and Trude Pritzi ( Austria ). The first set won Pritzi, the second, however, Aaron. In the third set of the game at the registry of 19:16 timed out (105 minutes) was canceled. The game was not scored and it was therefore not a new title awarded. 64 years before the two players was awarded the gold medal in retrospect.

  • Richard Bergmann - a defensive player - was three times individual world champion, but for different countries: 1937 for Austria, in 1939 and 1950 for England. After the annexation of Austria to Germany in 1938, he fled to England because he feared reprisals as a Jew by the Nazis.
  • Richard Bergmann was until today (2003) at age 17 the youngest individual champion.
  • 1970 died Bergmann. In his honor, the Fair Play Award was renamed the Richard Bergmann Fair Play Award.
  • The new time rule was not always consistently applied. The 4- set match between Trude Pritzi ( Austria ) and Angelica Adelstein - Rozeanu (Romania ) took longer than 1 hour and 45 minutes. It has not been canceled, because the table was just not needed otherwise.
  • The Hungarian Tibor Házi was not set up in the World Cup team, although he was the reigning champion of Hungary and Budapest. He had changed the club - and you resented him.
  • The U.S. is the first country in the same time the men's and women's team wins the competition.
  • For the first time a " special table tennis " is issued.
