Bohumil Váňa

Bohumil Váňa ( born January 17, 1920 in Prague, † November 4, 1989 ) was a Czech tennis players. He was 1938 and 1947 world champion in singles.

Career

Váňa came from a Prague locksmith family. At 9 years old he brought his older brother Václav in clubs and pubs in the table tennis game. His patron was Vendelín Vesely, who noticed his talent and took him to the renowned Wenceslas Square to the Prague club " Sparta ". In the club, which promoted specifically talented youth, he trained henceforth together with his great role model Stanislav Kolář, the Prague World Champion Doubles in 1936.

Váňa strength were its variable mark-ups and hard smashes his forehand.

Between 1935 and 1955 he participated in 12 World Championships. He won several gold medals: Twice in singles, three in men's doubles, and three times in the mixed doubles. Five times he was world champion with the Czech team. He was also 38 -fold Czechoslovak champion.

In 1955, he ended his career and received under condition of attending a training school of a job as a youth coach offered. Váňa refused. He was injured in his honor, as a 13-time world champion and multiple national champion not being able to train the youth even without visiting such a school and withdrew bitter. Also for the European Championship 1986 in Prague, he did not appear.

To 1977 Bohumil Váňa had moved with his wife in a house of the Prague bishopric court. Since 1987 he increasingly suffered from mental illness and had only a bishop Joseph Hrdlicka and Stanislav Kolář contact. Shortly before his 70th year, died Váňa, who was his life remained Non smoking, throat cancer and was buried in Prague- Motol.

Váňa wrote ( before 1951 ) table tennis book Pět stupňů k mistrovství světa ( My way to become world champion five times ).

  • 1951 in Vienna: 1st doubles (with Ivan Andreadis ), 1st place Mixed ( with Angelica Adelstein - Rozeanu ), 1st place with team
