1955 World Table Tennis Championships

The 22nd World Table Tennis Championship took place from 16 to 24 April 1955 in Utrecht ( Netherlands). Venue was the Bernard Hall at the fairgrounds.

Game Mode

The 32 men's teams were drawn into four groups of eight teams. The 22 women's teams were divided into two sevens and a group of eight. In all the groups Everyone played against everyone. Only the group first came into the final round

Cutting off the Germans

Men's team competition

The German team entered in Group IV. She won against the Saarland, Lebanon, Wales and Switzerland respectively 5-0 and 5-1 against Spain. These two 5-3 defeats coming against Romania and against England. This meant third place and overall 9th place As a result, Germany was promoted from the ITTF of Performance Category II Category I.

The crew of the Saarland also played in Group IV, you just won against Lebanon 5-4 and finished second to last.

Women's team competition

The German ladies sat in group three against Switzerland ( 3-2 ) and against Italy ( 3-1 ) by. The East German Oskar Frank failed in the qualifying round, despite the victories over H. Westerink (Netherlands ) and Walter Spruyt (Belgium ) because of the defeat against Christian Awart ( Austria ). Lothar Pleuse also did not survive the qualifying round. He defeated Peters ( Netherlands) and Van Gelder (Belgium ), but not Wout Heemskerk (Netherlands). He then competed in the consolation round, where he retired after victories over Roland (Belgium ), Guy Dela Barre (Belgium) and Stig Nasström (Sweden) against Bo Malmqvist (Sweden). Horst Jung ( Bonn) lost in the entrance round against Curt Osterholm (Sweden). Hans Meier rock sat against Lennart Johansson ( Sweden), but not against the Australians Arden Robinson.

Josef Seiz convinced despite his defeat against the strong May Van Hoa ( South Vietnam ). In the consolation round, he defeated J. Tarrago (Spain ), Roger Cardo (Belgium) and Mogens Nicolajsen (Denmark) and then defeated the Swede Bo Malmquist. Kurt Seifert came against Khadiga Rifaat Abou heif (Egypt) to the next round, where he retired against Brian Merrett (England). Two rounds survived Matthias Günter against André Steckler ( Switzerland ) and Willie Van Zoelen (Netherlands), before he lost to Toma Reiter ( Romania).

Leopold Holusek came up in the fourth round by defeating Moustapha Nasr (Egypt), Mikhail Karaneshev (Bulgaria) and Laszlo Várkony (Hungary). Then, however, the later world champion Toshiaki Tanaka was too strong. Just as far as it brought Heinz Schneider, against Aubrey Simons ( England ) and Karl Wegrath ( Austria ) and won without a fight progressed into round two. In the fourth round he defeated the Romanians Matei Gantner. The hopefuls Conny Freundorfer disappointed when he lost after the victories against Fawzi El- Abrashi (Egypt) against Frenchman Stephen Cafiero.

Women's Singles

Renate Kohn difference already in the qualifying round against Elsie Carrington (England). Uschi Fiedler survived the qualification by beating Claudine Collingnon (Belgium ), Maria Janssens (Belgium) and Margo van Wijk (Netherlands). Then she was defeated in the first round of Egyptian Fawika El- Shayati. Also last stop was in round one for Hannelore sleeping against Margaret Fry ( England) and Annegret Thöle against Hana Vyhnanovska (CSR).

The second round reached two German players. Hannelore Hanft beat out Gisele Jeannotin (France). Then they lost to the Dutch Nel Groot. Hilde Kraska won against Margita Covic (Yugoslavia) and was subject Fujie Eguchi (Japan).

Men's doubles

The most was the double Freundorfer / Rock Meier. After victories over Jean -Louis Mathieu / Maurice Genton (France), a Spanish double and Bernhard Bukiet / Erwin Klein (USA) they reached the quarter-finals. Here they lost 0-3 to the eventual champion Ivan Andreadis / Ladislav Štípek (CSR).

The eventual winner of the bronze medal Ichiro Ogimura / Yoshio Tomita (Japan) were too strong. Holusek / Seiz won against Fernando de Castro Olazzari / Alberto Kurdoglian (Brazil) and then lost to Alex Ehrlich / Raoul Bedoc (France) with 2:3. The East German double Matthias / Pleuse defeated Roger Cardo / Jean Ventat (Belgium) and then failed to El-Abrashy/Mohammed Fawzi El- Ashmawy (Egypt). Also Schneider / Frank reached the second round against K. Gustafsson / Tony Larsson ( Sweden ), where they lost to Richard Miles / John Somael (USA).

The Saarland double Willi Trautmann / Werner White came to Henny Grijzenhout / Pit Weel (Netherlands) to the next round and then lost to the eventual champion Ivan Andreadis / Ladislav Štípek (CSR).

Women Doubles

The most successful sleep / Fiedler, who came to the last 16. They threw Leah Neuberger / Pauline Robinson ( USA) and Mina Ulrich / Gisele Jeannotin ( Switzerland / France) out of the race and then lost against Ermelinde Wertl / Ann Haydon ( Austria / England).
