1963 World Table Tennis Championships

The 27th World Table Tennis Championship took place until 14 April 1963 in Prague ( Czechoslovakia ) of 5.

All titles go to Asian and female players. In the men's teams of China wins ahead of Japan. The German team led by Erich Arndt and Eberhard Scholer occupied together with the Swedish team to Hans Alser and Kjell Johansson an excellent third place, the best result, which achieved a German men's team until then.

The finals in the men's singles wins - in a rematch of the endgame of 1961 in Beijing - Chuang Tse -Tung against Li Fu - Jung.

For the first time Agnes Simon playing in a World Cup for Germany and achieved with the women's team to 9th place. Before, they had already participated in the World Championships flying the flag of Hungary and the Netherlands.

Gentlemen

As in the men competed 47 teams, the 21 weakest nations had to compete in a qualifying round. Here they were divided into six groups, the group winners reached the main round. In this four eight groups were formed in each team played against each. The four group winners came into the semi-finals where they were fighting for a place in the final of the KO system.

Winners of the qualifying rounds were North Vietnam, Greece, Portugal, Israel, Indonesia and Wales, which then in the main groups but landed only on the rear seats. In the major class, China, Germany, Sweden and Japan prevailed. In the semifinals, China won 5-1 against Germany and Japan with 5-0 win over Sweden. World champion China was a 5-1 victory over Japan.

Ladies

For the 37 women's teams reported no qualifiers were upstream. Instead, three nines and draw a group of ten. As Greece, Singapore, Ghana, and Pakistan did not competed reduced to the individual groups to 7-9 participants.

The winners Romania, China, Japan and Hungary. In the semi-final, in Romania were against China and Japan against Hungary. The final won by the Japanese women with 3-0 win over Romania.

Men's team Germany and the GDR

Conny Freundorfer fell out due to an arm injury in the run. For him, Elmar Stegmann was nominated.

The German men's team competed in Group B where they were unbeaten first. There were 5-0 victories against France, Indonesia and Australia, also the game against Brazil was clearly won with 5:2. More difficult was the struggle against Romania, as they still achieved a 5:3 success from a 0:2 deficit. With the same result, the team won against North Korea. The last game against Hungary decided on the group. After 3-1 lead and 3:4 residue Germany narrowly won 5-4. In the semifinals against China Erich Arndt took the single point. In the 1:5 defeat Germany had no chance.

Achievers were Eberhard Scholer with a score of 16:3 and 14:4 with Erich Arndt. Both were used in all team fights. Elmar Stegmann section 3-2 on a positive note, Dieter Michalek was 2:4 negative, as Ernst Gomolla with 1:4.

The crew of the GDR came in Group C in the third place. Against the two first, Sweden and Czechoslovakia, they lost with 0:5. The remaining five games were won: 5-2 against Austria, 5-1 win over Egypt and Wales, 5-3 against Switzerland and 5-0 against Portugal.

Women's team Germany and the GDR

The German women stood at the end tied in Group D with Hungary and England forward. Due to best match ratio Hungary came to a place, Germany was split second. Thus, the collection was missed in the final round. The team defeated Indonesia, North Vietnam, Belgium, Italy, France and North Korea, respectively 3-0 and England 3-2. The Hungarians defeated it 0-3.

Most games completed Agnes Simon with a 8:1 track record and Harst Inge with a 5-2 result. Edit Buchholz and Ingrid Kriegelstein each won a game and remained unbeaten.

The East German team came in Group B behind China in second place. She won against the Soviet Union and Canada 3-1 and against New Zealand, Switzerland, Wales and Luxembourg 3-0. Against China, there was a 0:3 defeat.

Men's Singles Germany

Only Eberhard Scholer came forth two rounds. He sat down securely against Vahaken Ohanessian (Lebanon) and Ivan Severo (Brazil ) through, but was defeated by the Japanese Koji Kimura 3-1. Erich Arndt retired in the second round against the Chinese Chang Chi -Lin, after Pak Sin II (North Korea) off. Dieter Michalek was defeated after a bye Dorin Giurgiuca (Romania). Ernst Gomolla threw to fail Alan Thomas (Wales ) out of the race and then to Mario Mariotti ( Switzerland ). Elmar Stegmann lost in the first round against Bernhard Bukiet (USA). In the consolation round, he reached the final.

Women's singles Germany

The most successful was Agnes Simon, who lost in the first round against Liang Li- Chen (China). Before that, she had prevailed against Angela Papp (Hungary ), M. Hrstková ( CSSR ) and Irena Bosa (CSR). Ingrid Kriegelstein won by walkover against Funtsch (Sweden). Then she succumbed Sun Mei -ying (China). Just far came Edit Buchholz to victories over Yen Tahi Uong (North Vietnam) and Svetlana Grinberg (USSR). Maria Alexandru (Romania ) was too strong. Directly in de first round eliminated from Inge Harst ( against Ma Kuang -hung, China) and Rosemarie Gomolla ( against Hu Ke -ming, China).

Doris Kalweit (GDR) was defeated in the first round of Svetlana Grinberg (USSR).

Men's doubles Germany

No German men's doubles came into the second round. In the third round Arndt / Michalek failed to Jaroslav Staněk / Viliam Polakovič ( CSSR ) (after a bye and noncombat victory ) and Scholer / Stegmann to young Kuo-tuan/Wang Chia -sheng (China ) (after wins over Ian Barclay / Robert Kerr, Scotland and Pierre Julien / Alain Cussac, Belgium). Gomolla / Kent Johansson ( Germany / Sweden) prevailed against the Peruvians J. Garcia / Augusto Gonzales, but not against Ian Harrison / David Creamer (England).

Women Doubles Germany

The most successful Simon / Harst that each Lis Ramberg / Evy Schandorph (Denmark), Joan Brown / Jeannette Crosby (New Zealand) and Shih Chieh -wen Feng-ling/Hsiao interspersed (China ), and finally in the quarterfinals against the Chinese double Qiu Zhonghui / Wang Chien lost. Buchholz / Kriegelstein reached after beating Angela Papp / Julia Faludi (Hungary ), Isabella Colombo / Mugnoz Alessandra (Italy ) and Eva Johansson / Eleonora Mihalca ( Sweden / Romania) the knockout stages, where they face Liang Li-chen/Ti Chuang -hua (China) lost. The international double Gomolla / Lesley Bell ( Germany / England) was eliminated by Kalweit / Kunz (DDR ).

Mixed Germany

In mixed competition, the Swedish- German couple alser / Harst reached the quarterfinals. It defeated after the first round play-free Yang Jui-hua/Sun Mei -ying (China), K.Johansson / Lena Guntsch (Sweden) and Chou Lan-sun/Ma Kuang -hung (China). Counter Keiichi Miki / Masako Seki (Japan), they then lost with 1:3.

All other Germans dropped out before the second round:

Find out more

  • The ITTF did not allow for a participation of Taiwan, because that State National China called instead of Formosa.
  • As in the team competitions because of the large differences in skill level, many -sided and therefore unattractive encounters came about, there were plans to introduce another system with upstream qualifications at the next World Cup.

Philately

  • On 28 January 1963, Czechoslovakia was a special stamp worth 30 Heller for this World Cup out ( Michel catalog # 1,377 ). The brand is part of a six- block, with a circulation of more than 5 million pieces. During the World Cup there was a special.
