1975 World Table Tennis Championships

The 33rd World Table Tennis Championship took place from 6 to 16 February 1975 in Calcutta (India) in the Sports Hall New Indoor Stadium instead. A total of 63 nations were represented.

Summary

In the finals of the team competition the men of Yugoslavia tried to shake with Šurbek Dragutin Antun Stipančić and the penholder player Milivoje Karakasevic the Chinese domination, but failed ultimately clear. The Swedish title holder to Kjell Johansson and Stellan Bengtsson occupied the 3rd place.

In the men's singles led Antun Stipančić - " The Man with the Golden Hand " - already after 2-0 sentences, but still lost 2:3 against the Hungarian István Jonyer, which together with Gábor Gergely against Antun Stipančić / Dragutin Šurbek the title in the Mr. double secured.

Competition mode Teams

The 16 teams of category 1 were divided two groups of eight A and B and were here in the system Free-for -All on. The top two teams qualified for the semifinals, where fighting the winner of Group A against the second of Group B and the winner of Group B against the second of Group A to reach the finals.

Similarly, the third and fourth group were playing for places five to eight, the Fifth and Sixth for places nine to twelve and the Seventh and Eighth for places 13 to 16

Also in Category II, two groups of eight were formed, which fought for the promotion to Category I ( at the next World Cup ). The Category III consisted in the men from five groups of four or five teams and the ladies from a single group of nine.

A race of men was carried out according to the Swaythling Cup system with three teams. The ladies played after Corbillon Cup system with two teams.

Men's team competition

The German team won in Group A against South Korea, Austria and France each with 5-1 and 5-0 against Denmark. This was offset by losses to the CSSR ( 0:5 ), USSR ( 2:59 and Sweden ( 3:5 ). This was enough for fourth place and thus the battle for positions five to eight. Here the team against Hungary was defeated with 1:5 and 0:5 with the USSR and thus came in eighth place.

Women's team competition

The ladies began in Group B with three wins in a row: England ( 3-2 ), Bulgaria ( 3-1 ) and Poland (3:2). This was followed by four losses: Japan and China ( each 0:3), Yugoslavia and Romania ( 1:3). This was enough for group number five. So they were playing for places 9 to 12 The 3-1 win over Sweden entitled to play for the places 9 and 19, which was lost to Romania with 1:3.

Men's Singles

Jochen Leiss reached by victories over Fraczik Stanislaw (Poland ), Marin Firanescu (Romania) and Miran Savnik (Yugoslavia) the second round, where he lost to Sarkis Sarchajan (USSR) with 0:3. One round before different Peter Stellwag against Gábor Gergely (Hungary ), after he had turned Hassan Sed Mirsadeghi (Iran) and Denis Neale (England). Heiner Lammers won against Boon (Singapore ) and lost against Milan Orlowski (CSSR ). Peter Engel had to defeat first in the qualifying round Kalyan Pandey (Nepal) and Kang Kong (Macau), before he failed in the first round of Anatoli Strokatow (USSR). Likewise, Engelbert Hüging survived against Jose Luis Huerta (Mexico) and Tan Yong Hong (Singapore ) the qualifying round, but then the Swede Kjell Johansson was too strong.

Women's Singles

No German lady survived the first round. Jana Eberle had already failed in the qualifying round, where they indeed Helen Morrow (Australia ) defeated, but lost to Jeanny Dom ( Luxembourg ). In the first round Wiebke Hendriksen failed to Sung Nak So ( South Korea), Monika Kneip to Chieko Ono (Japan) and Ursula Hirschmüller to Tomie Edano (Japan).

Men's doubles

Leiß / Stellwag survived two rounds. They sat down, they lost to Jacques Secretin / Jean -Denis Constant ( France) against Marin Firanescu / Buzesco Alexandru (Romania) and Li Chen-chih/Li Te -yang (China) by marriage. Hüging / Martin ( France) had to first compete in the qualifying round. This was achieved by victories over Dal Joon Lee / Peter Pradit (USA ) and Alex Maswili / Vipin Khanna (Kenya ). In the main round they threw Serban Dobosi / Teodor Gheorghe (Romania ) out of the race, but not the Japanese Shigeo Ito / Katsuyuki Abe. Angel / Heinrich Lammers were in the first round of Zbigniew Fracik / Marek Skibinsky (Poland ) out of the race.

Women Doubles

The double Hendriksen / Eberle came to a win over Le Thi Kim Tieng / Banh Ngoc Kinh ( Viet Nam) in the Round of 16, where it lost to the Japanese women Tomie Edano / Chieko Ono. Hirschmüller / Kneip immediately lost against Hyun Sook Chung / Kyung Ok Sim (South Korea).

Mixed

Angel / Eberle won in the qualifying round against Sen Poh Lin / Peck Noi Hwoy (Singapore ), in the first round against Chin / Tan Kek Hiang ( Singapore) and then subject to the Russians Anatoly Strokatow / Asta Gedraitite. Just far came Leiß / Kneip by defeating Stephen Knapp / Christine Little ( Australia / New Zealand) and a defeat against Lu Yuansheng / Hu Yulan (China). Hüging / Hendriksen sat down while in the qualifying round against Yap Chin Boon / Hock Leow Mui ( Singapore) and Zoran Kosanovic / Dubravka Fabri (Yugoslavia) through, but left against Li Pen / Ge Xinai (China ) in the main round. Also in round one failed Stellwag / Hirschmüller to Anatoli Strokatow / Asta Gedraitite (USSR).

  • For political reasons, Israel and South Africa were denied an entry visa.
  • The Yugoslav Dragutin Šurbek receives from the SCI Richard Bergmann Fair Play Award.
  • The Hungarian István Jonyer awarded the Victor Barna Price from SCI.
  • Multiple rain penetrated through the ceiling and forced to interrupt the game. These concerns were also the final of the women's doubles.
  • Winning the title in the women's singles for the North Korean Pak Yung -sun did not come to real is way. The Chinese Zhang Li received for political reasons, the statement to deliberately lose the final.
  • At the presentation ceremony, the Chinese Zhang Li was falsely presented instead of the North Korean Pak Yung -sun as World Champion. Only four months later we noticed the error.
  • Originally, the World Cup in New Delhi should be discharged, but was moved to Calcutta.
  • On February 6, 1975, a postage stamp was issued by India ( Michel catalog No. 619). In several Indian cities pictoral were used. From North Korea two postage stamps were brought ( Michel catalog No 1342 and 1343 ) on 16 February 1975 on the issue.
