1956 World Table Tennis Championships

The 23rd World Table Tennis Championship was held to 11 April 1956 in Tokyo ( Japan) from 2.

Survey

From Germany participated only men's team, but no women's team. This was due to high travel costs. Other leading European countries, such as Hungary, France, Austria, Yugoslavia and Switzerland, stayed away for financial reasons.

Japan - with the later ITTF President Ichiro Ogimura at the top - was the most successful nation with four gold medals. Matei (Matthias ) Gantner, in Germany as manager of Borussia Dusseldorf had great success later led the Romanian men's team to a surprising third place.

Cutting off the Germans

Bernie Vossebein was not initially considered in advance. After numerous discussions and after private sponsors the cost it took was still nominated.

As supervisor of the Germans acted Dieter Mauritz, who still took in the individual competitions.

Men's team competition

Germany competed in Group A. Here, the team won against Sweden ( 5-2 ), Philippines (5:1 ), Australia (5-0 ), Hong Kong (5-0 ) and Singapore ( 5:3 ). Against Japan, ( 0:5 ) and Romania ( 3:5 ) they suffered defeats. Thus, they came in group A and in third place in the overall standings to fifth place.

Men's Singles

Already in the first round failed Leopold Holusek ( against Fujii Motoo, Japan ), Dieter Mauritz ( against Keiji Kodama, Japan) and Bernie Vossebein ( against Chin Chung Sing, Hong Kong). Josef Seiz won against the Japanese Tatsuo Tsuno and retired in the second round against Chiang Yung- Ning (China). The most came Conny Freundorfer. After bye he threw the Philippines José Bajarias out of the race. In the third round he lost against the Japanese Seiji Yamada.

Men's doubles

Here approached the double Conny Freundorfer / Brian Kennedy ( England) and was defeated by the Japanese Tatsuo Tsuno / Akio Nohira. Also Bernie Vossebein / Krishna Nagaraj (India) failed at a Japanese duo, namely Toshiaki Tanaka / Keisuke Tsunoda. Leopold Holusek / Josef Seiz missed because of a lunch their use against Toma rider / Matei Gantner.

ITTF Congress

  • Germany won the bid to host the World Cup in 1959.
  • After 1957, the World Cup is to, inter alia, be discharged for reasons of cost, only every two years. For the years between the Congress recommended the implementation of continental championships.

  • The Swede Gosta Brolin was only allowed to participate because he was wearing the travel costs themselves ( similar to the case Bernie Vossebein )
