2009 World Table Tennis Championships

The 54th World Table Tennis Championships were held from April 28 to May 5, 2009 in Yokohama ( Japan) at the Yokohama Arena, one of the largest multi-function halls in Japan, instead. Of the 20 possible medals were awarded 17 to China.

Organizer

The Japanese coastal town received on 27 April 2006 by the participants of the Annual General Meeting of the World Table Tennis ITTF at the edge of the World Team Championships in Bremen preference over Linz. With 111:43 votes the result was surprisingly clear. Japan was thus for the sixth time after 1956, 1971, 1983, 1991 and 2001, organizers of the World Table Tennis Championship.

Yokohama already gained experience with the alignment of large table tennis tournaments. 2005 and 2006 here the Japan Open took place. The World Cup 2009 was immersed in the celebrations for the 120 years anniversary of the founding of the city.

Mode

Any member may nominate for both the ladies and for the Lord competition up to five active. Up to two additional participants can be reported if in the ITTF world rankings in January 2009 Active an association were represented in the top 10 places. In this world ranking Timo Boll took fourth place, which is why the Germans were allowed to report six men. In contrast, the DTTB reported only four ladies because no other German has been assessed as sufficiently strong.

As host Japan is entitled to two additional entries per competition.

The world ranking according to the April 2009 96 best participants start in the main draw. The other participants will compete in a qualifying round in which to qualify for the main draw Active 32. In the main panel consisting of 128 participants, 64 of the best assets to be set. The next best 32 participants and the 32 climbers from the qualification round will be drawn added.

Cutting off the Germans

Men's Singles

A round progressed Bastian Steger ( Marcos Madrid ( Mexico) 4-1, Sharath Kamal Achanta (India) 1:4), Patrick Baum ( Gustavo Tsuboi (Brazil ) 4-1, Joo Se - hyuk (Korea ) 2:4 ) Zoltan Fejer - Konnerth and ( Gavin Rumgay (Scotland ) 4-1, Robert Gardos ( Austria ) 1:4).

Men's doubles

Ovtcharov / Steger played by victories over Mikkel Hindersson / Kasper Sternberg (Denmark ) and Thomas Keinath / Peter Sereda (Slovakia ) the knockout stages, where they (China) have failed to Hao Shuai / Zhang Jike.

Tree / Fejer - Konnerth eliminated in the first round against the Japanese Kenji Matsudaira / Jin Ueda.

Women's Singles

Elke Schall came after victories over Jiang Fang Lay (Australia) and Ai Fukuhara (Japan) in round three, where she lost to Li Xiaoxia (China).

Just far came Wu Jiaduo the Alexandra Privalova ( Belarus ) and Li Qiangbing ( Austria ) ausschaltete and then Ding Ning (China) defeated.

A round survived Kristin silver iron ( Carole Grundisch (France) 4-2, Haruna Fukuoka ( Japan) 1:4) and Zhenqi Barthel ( Joanna Parker ( England) 4-0, Park Mi -young (Korea ) 1:4).

Women Doubles

Both German double qualified for the knockout stages.

Barthel / silver iron prevailed against Mercedes Madrid / Laura Rosales ( Mexico) and Nikoleta Stefanova / Wenling Tan Monfardini (Italy ), but not against Guo Yue / Li Xiaoxia (China).

Sound / Wu Jiaduo won against Li Isabelle Siyun / Sim Kai Xin Zena ( Singapore) and Park Jung Young-sook/Seok Ha (Korea ) and then lost against Ai Fukuhara / Sayaka Hirano (Japan).

Mixed

There were four German mixed doubles.

The most successful were playing Sweet / sound / Wu Jiaduo. After four victories over Gencay Quantity / Fulya Ozler (Turkey), Panagiotis Gionis / Ekaterina Ntoulaki (Greece ), Kunihito Tasei / Mikie Tasei - Takahashi (Japan) and Gao Ning / Feng Tianwei (Singapore ) they lost in the quarterfinals against Zhang Jike / Mu Zi ( China).

Steger / Barthel survived two rounds against Sharath Kamal Achanta / Shamini Kumaresan (India) and Cai Xiao Li / Yu Mengyu ( Singapore). Then last stop against Xu Xin / Fan Ying was (China).

Fejer-Konnerth/Silbereisen defeated the Greeks Konstantinos Papageorgiou / Christina Fili and subject to the South Koreans Sang-eun/Dang Oh Ye Seo.

Tree / Wu Jiaduo off Bojan TOKIĆ / Manca Fajmut (Slovenia ) from. Then they lost to Andrej Gaćina / Andrea Bakula (Croatia).

Results

All finalists come without exception from the People's Republic of China.

New world champion in men's singles, Wang Hao, he defeated in the final of his compatriot Wang Liqin without dropping a set with 11-9, 13-11, 11-5, 11-9. In the men's doubles title went to Chen Qi and Wang Hao, Ma Long and Xu Xin, the 6-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-9 defeated.

In some women, the reigning Olympic champion Zhang Yining won over her compatriot Guo Yue in 6 sets of 10-12, 3-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9. In the women's double Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia won against Ding Ning and Guo Yan 11-8, 12-10, 11-4, 3-11, 11-7.

In the mixed doubles title went to Li Ping and Cao Zhen, Zhang Jike defeated and Mu Zi 11-6, 4-11, 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 11-8.
