1935 World Table Tennis Championships

The 9th World Table Tennis Championship took place from 8 to 16 February 1935 in London ( England). Because of the many participants, the competitions were held at several different venues. Was organized by the World Cup of W. J. Pope, Arthur Kingsley Vint and Ivor Montagu.

Ahead there was great political -related problems. For fear of anti-Semitism in Germany, the Hungarian delegation took a detour. The journey was not allowed to be made by Germany, because some of the Hungarian Jews were ( Barna Szabados, Bellak ). The Indian team had in the search for accommodation in England problems because " Colored " were not welcome. The German Table Tennis Association waived again on providing a men's team. In order to protest against the fact that Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales competed with their own teams.

More than 10,000 spectators watched the competitions. For the first time the U.S. was there - a total of 17 nations took part. Therefore, one played in the men's teams in two groups. In Group A, Hungary finished 1st place ahead of Austria, in Group B won the Czechoslovakia. The final again won the Hungary and thus became the eighth time world champion.

In the men's singles is brought Victor Barna (Hungary ) for the fourth consecutive world title. It should be his last title in the singles competition. The final against Miklos Szabados was hard fought, it had to be interrupted twice: In the second sentence Szabados fell against a barrier and had to be treated medically. Later Barna had to be massaged because of cramps in the fingers. In May 1935 Barna suffered serious injuries in a car accident on his right arm. This abruptly ended his career. Nevertheless, he should be world champion again in 1939 in doubles.

In the women's teams, Germany took this time only the third place behind Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In the women's singles Kettnerová Marie defended her title.

  • In London, the World Table Tennis Federation ITTF changes its statutes: There is no distinction between "amateur" and "Professional". Instead, there is only " player ".
