Miklós Szabados

Miklos Szabados [ Miklos ː ʃ sɒbɒdoʃ ] ( born March 20, 1912 in Budapest, † January 12, 1962 in Sydney) was the late 20s and early 1930s, to the best table tennis players in the world. In 1931 he became world champion in singles, next he still won 6 gold medals in doubles with Victor Barna and 3 gold medals in mixed doubles with Mária Mednyánszky.

Career

Szabados was a Jew. He grew up in Hungary. His career ran parallel to that of Victor Barna and Bellak László, which is why they also called the Three Musketeers. At 17 he was Hungarian champion for the first time. In the same year he also took part in a World Cup. Here he became world champion in doubles and in the team competition at first. In the singles final, he defeated Fred Perry.

In 1931 he was finally World Champion in singles. Other titles in the individual usually stood Victor Barna in the way, he lost to several times in playoffs.

Szabados studied in Berlin, Germany in 1933 but had to leave because of the Nazis. Together with Bellak he toured France - to the dismay of the Hungarian national team, which therefore does not nominated him for the World Cup 1933.

In 1936 he ended his tournament career. This year he took part for the last time at the World Cup and at the Hungarian Championship.

In August 1937 he started together with István Kelen a tour of Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and Japan in 1938. Here they held many exhibition matches; also they successfully took part in several tournaments. Szabados remained during the entire Second World War in Australia.

In 1941 he opened the first Table Tennis Centre in Sydney. In 1951, he was blocked by the Australian Table Tennis Association for an indefinite period because he played without his permission in Victoria.
