1979 World Table Tennis Championships

The 35th World Table Tennis Championship was held to 6 May 1979 in Pyongyang (North Korea) on 25 April.

The winners

Sensational dethroned the trained Ferenc Sido Hungary with the multiple world champion István Jonyer at the top of the Chinese defending champion with a 5-1 final victory. Already in the group matches against China Hungary had won 5-2. Crucially, the Hungarian player best to cope with the Chinese premiums. In addition, both had István Gábor Gergely Jonyer as well as the way they play the approximated by Tibor Klampar, acted closer to the table and placed the emphasis on the aggressive, fast-paced and less stressed spin topspin.

The men's singles was won by the Japanese Seiji Ono against the hot favorites Guo Yuehua, who gave up the final match due to injury.

In the men's doubles were victorious in an all European final the Yugoslavs Antun Stipančić / Dragutin Šurbek against the World Champion from 1971 István Jonyer / Tibor Klampar.

Team competition

The men won against the U.S. and against France, then lost against North Korea, Yugoslavia, China, Hungary and England and defeated at the end of Australia. The ladies were victorious against Czechoslovakia, USA, Bulgaria, Hong Kong and Romania. They lost against England, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and North Korea.

Men's Singles

All German men reached the third round. Here lost Jochen Leiss against the Chinese Guo Yuenhua (after victories over Martti, FIN and Carlsson, SWE ), Peter Stellwag against the eventual World Champion Seiji Ono (after walkover and victory against Boggan, USA ), Hans -Joachim Nolten against Tibor Klampar (after wins against Van Slobbe, NED and Patrick Birocheau, FRA ), Engelbert Hüging against eventual third Zhenshi Li from China ( after victories against Knapp, oFF and Gheorghe, ROM) and Ralf Wosik against eventual Fourth Liang Geliang from China (compared to Siegen Zoran Kalinic, YUG and Ricky Seemiller, USA).

Men's doubles

Hüging played with the Russian Igor Solopov and lost in round 3 against the Chinese Wang Huyuan / Li Zhenshi. Nolten and Wosik already retired on the first round against Appelgren (SVE ) / Boehm (ROM). The most successful Leiß / Stellwag that have penetrated into the quarter- finals and defeated here by the Hungarians Jonyer / Klampar.

Women's Singles

Monika Kneip - Stumpe first had to qualify in a qualifying round for the main rounds, but failed. Kirsten Kruger difference in the first round against Pak Yong Ok of North Korea. Only Ursula Hirschmüller survived Round 1 by defeating Ferenczi (ROM), but failed thereafter to Ilona Uhlíková (CSR).

Women Doubles

The two double with German participation were knocked out in the first round: Hirschmüller / Kruger against the eventual runners- Ge Xinai / Guili Yan from China and Kneip - Stumpe / Stevenson ( ENG) against Uhlíková / Šilhanová (CSR).

Mixed

In this competition occurred at three German couples, but all of them failed in the first round: Leiß / Kneip - Stumpe against Fabri / Jurcic ( YUG ), Nolten / Kruger against Secretin / Bergeret (FRA) and Wosik / Hirschmüller against Cho Yong Ho / Yong Ok Pak (North Korea).

Policy

North Korea refused to teams of Israel and South Korea entry. Considerations of the other participants to boycott the World Cup or a " world tournament" downgrade, found no majority.
