Villers-lès-Luxeuil

Villers- lès- Luxeuil is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Villers- lès- Luxeuil situated at an altitude of 277 m above sea level, 9 km southwest of Luxeuil -les- Bains and about 20 km north- northeast of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the northern part of the department, in a small valley on the western edge of the plain of Luxeuil and Talniederung the Lanterne, at the northern foot of the heights of the Bois de la Grande Brosse.

The area of ​​9.10 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the rolling countryside of the south of the Lanterne. The northeastern part of the area occupied by the Alluvialniederung the Lanterne. History

The area around Villers was inhabited in prehistoric times. The earliest evidence of human presence date back to the Paleolithic era. From the Gallo-Roman wall foundations of a farm were discovered. In the Middle Ages Villers belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government has held the monastery of Luxeuil. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Villers- lès- Luxeuil is a member of the comprehensive 17 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Saulx.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent was rebuilt in the 18th century. It has a richly appointed interior, including an octagonal baptismal font from 1541, a richly carved pulpit, paneling and furnishings from the 18th century and various statues. Also worth seeing are the three wells and the Lavoir from the 19th century, whose roof is supported by several pillars.

Population

With 341 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Villers- lès- Luxeuil one of the smaller towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 419 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again. Since then, the population has doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Villers- lès- Luxeuil was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village.
