Vinzenz Lachner

Vinzenz Lachner ( born July 19, 1811 in Rain am Lech, † January 22, 1893 in Karlsruhe ) was a German composer, conductor and music educator.

Life

Vinzenz Lachner was born into a musical family. His father was a watchmaker and organist Anton in Rain, he received from him his first music lessons. His brothers Franz and Ignaz and his step- brother Theodore were also composers, the two sisters worked as organists.

He attended high school from 1822 to Augsburg, which he, however, did not end for unknown reasons. From 1830 he worked after the intervention of his brother Francis as a music teacher at Graf Mycielski to Cosvitz in Poznan. Vinzenz Lachner received in 1834 the place of his brother Ignaz at the Reformed Church and the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. In 1836 he went - now succeeded his brother Franz -. Kapellmeister at the National Theatre Mannheim and remained there, with brief interruptions until his early retirement in 1873 so he was in 1842 as conductor of the German opera company based in London, in 1848, he took over for a short time the position of music director in Frankfurt am Main. After his retirement from the post of conductor in Mannheim Lachner moved to Karlsruhe. He initially worked as a private tutor, from 1884 as a music teacher at the Grand Ducal Baden Conservatory.

Among his contemporaries, he was estimated approximately by Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann. Among his students in Mannheim was one of the conductor Hermann Levi, in Karlsruhe, the pianist Max von Pauer.

His birthplace Rain pays tribute to him with a street name, the brothers - Lachner Museum, which is housed in the birthplace, as well as the naming of the brothers - Lachner Middle School. In Karlsruhe and Mannheim also streets were named after Vinzenz Lachner.

Work

The compositional works Vinzenz Lachner, who faced the New German School adverse, mainly includes vocal works, his most popular songs, but also two symphonies and overtures and chamber music. He also wrote an incidental music to Schiller's Turandot. A Festival Overture and a piano quartet were awarded prizes. He gained beyond the call of eminent conductors. His works are - now largely forgotten - except for his comic male choirs.
