Vitebsk Region

The Wizebskaja Woblasz (White Russian Віцебская вобласць; Russian Витебская область / Witebskaja Oblast ) is an administrative district in the north of Belarus. Capital of Woblasz is Vitebsk ( weißr. Віцебск; Russian Витебск / Vitebsk ).

The Woblasz comprises 40,000 km ² and is 1.3211 million inhabitants ( 2004), among many Russians. In the Wizebskaja Woblasz many people were resettled from contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster in the south of Belarus.

The area is divided into 21 counties, 249 village Soviets, 19 cities (including 5 cities in the area subordination ) and 26 urban settlements. The center is the city of Vitebsk with 367,000 inhabitants.
