Vitold Kreyer

Witold Anatoljevich Krejer (Russian Витольд Анатольевич Креер; born October 12, 1932 in Krasnodar ) is a former Soviet athlete. He won the 1956 and 1960 Olympic bronze medal in the triple jump. At a height of 1.80 m his competition weight was 70 kg.

Career

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 Krejer won the bronze medal with 16.02 meters behind the Brazilian Adhemar Ferreira da Silva and the Icelanders Vilhjálmur Einarsson. At the European Championships in 1958, he left in qualifying.

In 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome before the last attempt of the Pole Józef Szmidt with 16.81 meters in front of a native of Belarus Vladimir Gorjajew with 16.63 meters and the colored American Ira Davis with 16.41 meters. Krejer succeeded in the last experiment, a width of 16.43 meters. When he then wanted to congratulate Davis, Krejer fended off the congratulations, because now the fifth-placed Einarsson had one more try. The audience in the Roman Olympic Stadium misunderstood Kreyers gesture as racist and whistled Krejer mercilessly. Krejer not understand the whistles, he did not even know he was meant. A Soviet supervisor rushed to him and together they went to Davis to clarify the situation. But the audience could not be explained, and after Einarsson did not improve, and chipped it past the trend continued at the awards ceremony. Gorjajew led his crying teammates after the victory ceremony of the stadium.

Krejer still took part in the European Championships in 1962 and the Olympic Games in 1964, but both times was not beyond the qualification.

He was third in 1957 and 1958, second in the Soviet championships. 1960 and 1961 he became Soviet champion in 1962 was followed by a second place finish and 1963 he was again third. His personal best of 16.71 meters he set up in 1961.
