Vítor Damas

Vítor Manuel Afonso Damas de Oliveira ( born October 8, 1947 in Lisbon, † September 10, 2003 ) was a Portuguese footballer. He was long goalkeeper of Sporting Lisbon and the Portuguese national team. He was a heavy smoker and died in 2003 with only 55 years in a Lisbon cancer hospital of lung cancer.

Career

Age of 13, Damas came to Sporting; In 1968 he had his first appearance in the First League. In 1975 he moved to Spain to Racing Santander, Racing he was five years in the target. In 1980 he returned to Portugal and played until 1983 in Vitória Guimarães and another season for Portimonense SC, before he returned to his hometown club in 1984. At Sporting Damas ended his active career on November 27, 1988, six weeks after he became 41 years old. He then worked as a coach and goalkeeper coach.

National

Damas ' career as a national player went over 17 years; his first game in the Seleção, he completed on April 6, 1969 for Mexico. In the 17 years he has been used 29 times in the Portuguese selection. During Euro 1984 he was a goalkeeper, and also in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. There, however, he came to two inserts, after regular keeper Manuel Bento had hurt. His last game for Portugal he played at this World Cup on 11 June 1986 against Morocco (1:3).
