Viviers, Ardèche

Viviers is a commune with 3895 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes; it belongs to the district Privas and is the administrative center of the canton of Viviers.

History

Viviers is a medieval-themed town on the right bank of the Rhône, south of Montelimar. The town is the capital of Vivarais and since the 5th century as the seat of the diocese of Viviers an important religious center with privileges to him in the 9th century by the kings of Charles the Bald († 877) and Lothar († 986 ) were granted.
