Von Null auf 42

From zero to 42 is the name of a three part series of SWR from 2004, which was also broadcast on other ARD broadcasters and on arte.

The series deals with the course of a year, are prepared in the running for beginners running a marathon. The goal was the successful participation at the New York City Marathon. The series' writers were Rolf Schlenker as a project manager as well Marcus Vetter and Harold Woetzel.

For the project to 17,000 enthusiasts had applied, from which seven people were selected. These seven individuals had different ages and very different physical constitution. Overhead was all that they untrained went into the project. The project was managed medically by Thomas Wessinghage.

Participant

The individual participants were:

  • Dieter Schmid ( 34), manager of the private brewery in the southern Black Forest House. He was for a long time been frequently runs driven active before, but had stopped due to time a long time ago.
  • Anna Pal Singh (52 ), a housewife from Hamburg, three children. She weighed 90 kg at a height of 1.62 m and was never previously engaged sporty.
  • Anna Freda (46 ), a housewife with three children. She weighed 59 kg at 1.73 m height.
  • Iris Gehrmann (44 ), dental assistant, two children.
  • Hans -Jürgen Franke Mücke (61 ), an architect from Berlin. He weighed 95 kg at the beginning.
  • Michael Reufsteck (27 ), Radio Presenter at SWR3. He weighed 90 kg at a height of 1.78 m.
  • Frank (41) prison officer from Remscheid. He weighed 86 kg at the start at a size of 1.70 m.

Course of the project

The first participants completed a performance test in Damp, where Wessinghage is director of a rehab clinic. The participants showed a partially so poor fitness that some of them could not start running training, but had to start with walking.

During training, participants made very uneven progress. Iris Gehrmann was thrown back from constant joint pain and diseases over again, Anna Pal Singh struck hard at the training. They barely lost weight and could not adapt to their training plans her running load. Frank suffered a torn ligament, the participant Anna Freda could not cope with the training plan and ran routes in its sole discretion. In mosquito - Franke showed the most progress, he lost in a very short time a large part of his excess weight.

After half a year, a progress test was planned. The participants took part in a half marathon ( Gutenberg Marathon Mainz ), in which Mrs. Pal Singh collapsed at km 16, as they - straight out of a India - holiday returns - still suffered from bronchitis. Since she could not achieve great success in running, she decided that she would go on with walking.

The Marathon in New York City were all participants get through, although sometimes only with problems. The participant Frank, previously one of the fittest participants had to stand still plagued by side stitches and cramps often. Gehrmann woman had pain while running, but managed to drag with walking breaks, medicines and perseverance to the end. Anna Pal Singh was a walker, although slowly, finished the marathon but with success. Behind this group still followed by hundreds more participants of the marathon.

Some participants were running training continued and completed in the meantime additional marathons, now published books about their experiences in the project and are much sought-after talk-show participants.

Continuation of the project

In May 2004, the SWR continued the project and called on his audience to do the same participants in the TV documentary. About a virtual running club Aspiring marathoners could download training plans and were cared for by an expert team. On May 8, 2005 1,200 participants walked at the Gutenberg Marathon in Mainz at the start. Some 700 of these completed her first marathon that day.

The website of the project still exists and is one of the most popular running communities in Germany.
