Voose ( German Wosel ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Hanila ( Hanila vald ) in Lääne in Estonia.

Population and location

The place has twenty inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is located ten kilometers north-east of the port Virtsu.

The most famous son of the town is the Baltic German writer Carl Siegfried Benjamin of Bremen. He was born in 1905 on the estate of Voose.

Good

The estate of Voose was founded in 1664 as Beigut Lihula. This single storey wooden mansion was kept low and served no representation purposes.

1870 by the then owner, who Deutschbaltin Margarethe Elisabeth Leopoldine of Pohlmann ( née von Bremen), reach a new, luxurious manor house with up to three storeys in close proximity. It was at that time one of the finest mansions in the Neoclassical style. Greatest ornament was an octagonal tower side. In addition, new outbuildings were built along the major parks.

Last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform of 1919, Henri Pistohlkors. Thereafter, the Estonian government distributed the land to small farmers. They used to set up their farms, the existing building as a building material. Today only few remains to be found.

After regaining the independence of the Estonian historical chimney of Dreschbodens was restored. An information board points to the history of the estate.
