Vuk Grgurević

Grgurević Vuk (Serbian Cyrillic: Вук Гргуревић, † 1485 ), also known as Despot Vuk Brankovic or Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk was a Serbian Despot ( 1471-1485 ).

Life

Vuk Grgurević was the son of Gregory Brankovic and grandson of despots Đurađ Brankovic. 1465 he joined the Hungarian army and was commander of the Serb military forces in Srem.

Because of his bravery Vuk Grgurević earned a very good reputation and has been celebrated as Vuk Zmaj Ognjeni, the Flaming Dragon Wolf ( Vuk = Wolf) in many folk songs.

Vuk fought for Hungary against the Czechs, the Poles, the Austrians and against the Ottoman Empire. In 1471 he obtained the title of Despot and got many possessions on the territory of today's Vojvodina, which were formerly part of the despot Đurađ Brankovic. Among his possessions are Kupinik (today Kupinovo ) Slankamen, Berkasovo, Bečkerek (today Zrenjanin ), Irig, etc.

He was married to Barbara Francopan. His most famous military forays were when he conquered Srebrenica in 1476. He led military campaigns in the near Sabac and Smederevo, 1480 he attacked Sarajevo. Vuk Grgurević died 1485th
