Wacław of Szamotuły

Waclaw z Szamotuł (* 1520 in Szamotuły in Poznań † around 1560 in Pinczów ), German: Wenzel of Samter ( places also performed under Waclaw Szamotulski or Latinized Venceslaus Samotulinus ) was a Polish composer of sacred works.

Wenzel of Samter was an educated man of the Renaissance: he studied law, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Krakow. Besides music, he also devoted himself to poetry, which he wrote both works in his native Polish language as well as in Latin. Either 1547 or 1548 - here are the sources clearly - he was appointed by Sigismund II Augustus, the court composer.

All spiritual - - ​​Works preserved until today, since Wenceslas died of Samter of an early death, therefore, only a few of his are. From Szymon Starowolski, the first biographer of the composer, comes the following statement:

" Had the gods gave him a longer life, so the Poles would not envy the Italians their famous composers such as Palestrina, Lappi, and vedana so. "

In his motet In te Domine speravi and Ego sum pastor bonus is the first Polish compositions that have ever been published outside Poland - in this case even in the German city of Nuremberg. The former was the presentation of a parody fair his compatriot January Fabrycy.

Among his compositions are a lost fair and the first for double plant in Poland.
