Waldemar Verner

Waldemar Verner ( born August 27, 1914 in Chemnitz, † February 15, 1982 in Berlin) was an officer of the People's Navy of the National People's Army of the GDR.

Family

Waldemar Verner was born the son of a metal worker and co-founder of the Communist Party in Chemnitz, Wenzel Verner (1887-1938) and his wife Anna, who was also a Communist. His older brother was Paul Verner (1911-1986), member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the SED in the GDR and Deputy Chairman of the State Council of the GDR.

Career

Waldemar Verner learned after visiting the eight-year elementary school in the occupation of shop window decorator. He joined in 1923 the Young Spartacus League and 1929 in the KJVD. Since 1930 he was a member of the KPD. Verner was arrested for his illegal activities for the Communist Party and imprisoned by the Nazis, then went into exile in the Soviet Union. There he took, among others, in 1935 the VI. World Congress part of the Communist Youth International. He then attended the International Lenin School. From 1938 Verner was engaged in illegal acts KPD in Denmark.

He returned in late 1945 returned to Germany and was after the forced merger of the SPD and the KPD to the SED in the SED served as county chairman in Hagenow.

In May 1947 he was appointed on the recommendation of the executive committee of the SED of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern in the District Executive Stralsund and elected alongside Ernst Guth for county chairman. He took part in September 1947 as a delegate at the Second Party Congress of the SED and on 6/7 December 1947 at the 1st German People's Congress in Berlin.

Following the exploits of Adolf Hennecke also the county board of the SED in Stralsund was anxious to create a similar example. Waldemar Verner to motivate the Stralsund Paul Maurer bag to a comparable performance succeeded.

Verner was at elections to the 3rd German People's Congress in May 1949, together with Paul Sack (for the fdgb ), Kurt Krönng ( Liberal Democratic Party ) and Hartwig Stender (CDU ) elected with 74.9 % of the votes cast in Stralsund. In the same year Verner left the district committee of the SED in Stralsund.

Waldemar Verner started his career as an officer on June 15, 1950 at the Central Lake Police in the Ministry of the Interior, the Inspector General and Director, he was until 1952. From 1952 to 1955 Verner held the office of the Chief of the People's Police lake based in Stralsund with the rank of vice-admiral ( since 1 October 1952). From 1955 to 1956 he studied at the Seekriegsakademie the Soviet Union.

From 1957 to 1959, Waldemar Verner chief of the naval forces. He then became Deputy Minister of National Defence and Chief of the DDR Main Political Administration of the National People's Army. Until his retirement from active duty 31 December 1978 at Verner took these functions true. On 1 March 1961 he was promoted as the first officer of the People's Navy Admiral.

The city of Stralsund awarded him in recognition of his contributions to the development of the city on May 8, 1980, the honorary citizenship, but this was revoked after the reunification. In 1985, the coastal missile regiment 18 the honorary name Waldemar Verner.
