The plot is based on the real story of ' Indian Agent ' John Philip Clum ( Audie Murphy ) as she told clums son in 1936 in the biography " Apache Agent". The film begins in 1874, as Clum, an Eastern government representative, to San Carlos, Arizona comes. He tried a new approach to achieve peace with the Apaches, namely due to the more respect for their autonomy, as by submitting to the army. But he is exposed to suspicions on the part of European settlers, as well as the part of the army and the Indians, especially Geronimo.

An Indian widow Tianay name ( Anne Bancroft ) falls in love with Clum, although this is in love with Mary Dennison (Pat Crowley). Clum receives help from his Irish-American friend Tom Sweeney (Charles Drake ).

The film was not a success at the box office, possibly reason was that Murphy is more of a peace- broker, as a battle enthusiastic action hero plays that the audience had then more likely to be expected.
